All About SPF: Your guide to sun exposure

Why is the misconception that melanin-rich skin doesn’t need sunscreen still so widespread — and what are the risks of believing it?

It’s a common myth that melanin-rich skin doesn’t need sunscreen. While deeper skin tones do have some natural protection due to higher melanin levels, they are not immune to sun damage. UV exposure can still lead to hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and more seriously, undetected skin cancers that often go diagnosed later and more aggressively. I think part of the misconception comes from the lack of representation in sun care marketing and education. For too long, SPF was only shown as a fair-skin concern. But the truth is, sun protection is universal skincare. No matter your shade, sunscreen is one of the most powerful and important tools we have to protect and preserve your skin.

How does sun exposure affect skin differently, and what invisible damage (like hyperpigmentation and aging) often goes unnoticed?

Sun exposure doesn’t show up the same way on everyone. While some skin types burn visibly, others may not show immediate signs of damage, allowing issues like inflammation, collagen breakdown, and hyperpigmentation to quietly build beneath the surface. Over time, this invisible damage reveals itself as uneven tone, dullness, fine lines, and textural changes that are much harder to reverse than to prevent. It’s not just about sunburn, it’s about the long game. UVA rays, in particular, are constant. They penetrate glass, reach deeper layers of the skin, and are major culprits behind photoaging. Daily sun protection isn’t just seasonal or situational it’s an everyday essential, no matter your skin tone or type.

Why is it important to protect your skin not just from sunburn, but from long-term issues like dark spots, uneven tone, and even skin cancer?

Protecting your skin isn’t just about avoiding a sunburn it’s about preventing the deeper, long-term consequences that aren’t always visible right away. Chronic sun exposure is one of the biggest drivers behind dark spots, uneven tone, loss of elasticity, and in the most serious cases, skin cancer. At my practice, these cases and melasma are the most common concerns I treat. Patients come in to correct years of sun damage that often requires more invasive laser treatments to even begin to reverse. Hyperpigmentation and sun-induced aging are especially stubborn, and they don’t discriminate by age or skin tone. So much of it is preventable with consistent, daily SPF. Sun care is truly the foundation of smart, results-driven skincare because once the damage sets in, the journey back becomes a lot more complex.
